Sonia Boyce is a painter and multi-media artist. After graduating from Stourbridge College of Art in 1983, she became a key figure in the British Black Arts Movement of the 1980s.

Through drawing, photography and collage, Boyce’s early works tackled issues of race, gender and contemporary urban experience. Since the 1990s, Boyce’s practice has taken on a collaborative and participatory approach. She works with artists, vocalists and audiences to create improvised and spontaneous collaborations, often using drawing, print, photography, video and sound to make the artwork.

Boyce is a Professor in Fine Art at Middlesex University and a Chair in Black Art & Design at the University of the Arts London. She has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally, and her work is held in several public collections.
