Sutapa Biswas is a British Indian conceptual artist. Often interrogating themes of gender, race and cultural and ethnic identity, she works across a wide range of media. Including drawing, painting, film, digital, video, performance and photography.

Biswas’ interests lie in the investigation of oral histories, literature and art history. Specifically investigating the ways in which large historical narratives often collide and conflict with personal ones. Born in Shantiniketan, West Bengal, India, Biswas moved to London with her family in 1966. She studied at the University of Leeds (1981-1985), the Slade School of Art (1988-1990) and the Royal College of Art (1996-1998).

Her works have been exhibited in galleries and museums widely, including the Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Neuberger Museum, New York, Iniva and Whitechapel Gallery. Her works are also held in many public and private collections including TATE Collections, Sheffield Museums and Art Galleries and Arts Council England.
