Edward

Born in 1938, Edward Piper was an English painter best known for his affectionate and figurative depiction of the female form.

He studied at Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, before attending the Slade School of Art in London. Initially gaining recognition as a photographer, Edward Piper was the eldest son of the artist John Piper. During his early practice, Edward worked collaboratively with his father on photographic projects for the Shell County Guides, but painting remained his passion and he returned to this medium again in later life.

His paintings have been interpreted as a celebration of life, capturing its colour and energy through his technique of painting at speed. He also painted a number of landscapes during his practice, including those of Corsica, Malta, France, Italy and Spain.

Edward Piper has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at London Catto Gallery, Beaux Arts and Messums London. While a number of his lithographs and screen prints are held in the Tate Gallery collection.
