Tom Phillips

Tom Phillips was a British painter, printmaker, collagist, musician and writer. Born in London in 1937, he attended St. Catherine’s College, Oxford in 1957. After returning to London in 1961, he continued his studies at the Camberwell School of Art where he was taught by artist Frank Auerbach.
His first solo exhibition in 1965 was held at the Artists International Association Gallery in London, followed by an exhibition at the Angela Flowers Gallery in 1970. Phillips was elected to the Royal Academy in 1984, going onto chair the Academy’s library and its Exhibition committee from 1995 to 2007. In 2002, he was made a Commander of the British Empire for his services to the Arts.
Phillips’ works are held in a number of global collections including the Bodleian Library, Ashmolean Museum, Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, National Gallery of Australia, Arts Council Collection and British Council.
