The Other Story was an exhibition that opened in 1989, curated by Rasheed Araeen and organised by the Hayward Gallery and Southbank Centre in London, offering the first retrospective show of British African, Caribbean and Asian modernism in the UK.
First shown at the Hayward Gallery, before going on to tour Wolverhampton and Manchester, it provided an extensive view of the contribution of Asian, Caribbean and African artists who had lived all or part of their lives in Britain. The exhibition emphasised the necessary placement of these artists within British art historical discourse.
Met with both criticism and acclaim at the time, the exhibition is now regarded as pivotal in establishing the significance of neglected and emerging British diaspora artists. Notable artists displayed in the exhibition include Sonia Boyce, Mona Hatoum, Lubaina Himid, Li Yuan-chia, Anwar Jalal Shemza and Aubrey Williams.
