Caws investigates artists' love affair with food
Food has long played a role in artistic imagery throughout the ages, from Picasso’s still-lifes to Andy Warhol’s famous screenprints of Campbell’s soup cans.
Using this as a starting point, The Modern Art Cookbook explores the culinary lives of the world’s greatest modern artists, poets and writers, presenting their own recipes and anecdotes about food alongside their delectable artistic creations.
Lichtenstein and food
We worked with the publisher, Reaktion Books, to supply and license images of food-themed paintings by the American Pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein.
Food became a regular motif in Lichtenstein’s later work, referencing the still-life paintings of early-twentieth century masters such as Picasso and Dali in his trademark comic book-style aesthetic.
In the chapter entitled ‘Fish’, Lichtenstein’s painting Blue Fish,1973 illustrates his own recipe for ‘Grilled Striped Bass’. His Still Life with Lobster, 1972 is paired with the surrealist Salvador Dali’s reflections on crustaceans.

Maria Kilcoyne, Publicity and Rights Director at Reaktion Books, said: " It's a lovely book and very thoughtfully put together. We have a good working relationship with DACS, and regularly use them for picture clearances and images of art by the artists they represent.”
