Step aboard Sir Peter Blake’s Dazzle Ferry

Until December 2016, passengers will be able to board the Snowdrop, a fully working Mersey Ferry which has been ‘dazzled’ by Sir Peter Blake with an iconic Pop art design.

Co-commissioned by Liverpool Biennial14-18 NOW WW1 Centenary Art Commissions and Tate Liverpool, the moving artwork takes inspiration from the distinctive ‘dazzle’ camouflage applied to battleships during World War I.

The complex interlocking geometric patterns served to baffle the eye rather than conceal, making it difficult to estimate a target’s range, speed and direction. The unique design of each ship also prevented them from being recognised by enemy U-boats and aircraft.

Images supplied for on-board exhibition

Inside Sir Peter Blake's Dazzle Ferry, passengers can learn about the history of dazzle camouflage through its onboard exhibition curated by Tate Liverpool and National Museums Liverpool. It is accompanied by an integrated education programme with free digital resources and interactive activities. Find out more.

Liverpool Biennial worked with Artimage to obtain a high-res image and seek copyright clearance for their reproduction of Sir Peter Blake’s Roxy Roxy, which was used for a print included in the exhibition. We also cleared digital reproductions of Peter Blake's work on the Liverpool Biennial’s website.
