“The image captured, in a poetic and allusive way, the world of our protagonist”
Showing at Liverpool’s Everyman Playhouse from 9-12 March 2016, Unsung tells the turbulent and uplifting story of abolitionist, poet and human rights campaigner, Edward Rushton. After working at sea on a slave ship, his experience of the horror and injustices of slavery, together with his tragic loss of sight, compelled him to take a stand against the prejudices of his time.
To promote the play, an image of Grace Reef, 2006 (pictured above) by Jason deCaires Taylor was licensed for use in the production’s poster.
John Graham Davies, co-writer, said: “The image captured, in a poetic and allusive way, the world of our protagonist, the forgotten, blind abolitionist Edward Rushton. The battle for African freedom is beautifully captured by the linked African statues.”
“I found Artimage accommodating and speedy in dealing with our request to use one of Jason's startling underwater sculpture images.”
Unsung is co-produced by Turf Love and DaDaFest, the internationally acclaimed disability arts company. Find out more.
