Simon Callery

London-based artist Simon Callery pushes the parameters of contemporary painting. He has worked on a number of long-term projects with archaeologists, leading him to create multi-sensory 'physical' paintings and to challenge the ubiquity of the image in art and daily life.
Callery originally trained as a sculptor, graduating from Cardiff College of Art in 1983, but from 1985 devoted himself to painting. In his early career, he exhibited alongside the Young British Artists at the Saatchi Gallery and in Sensation at the Royal Academy of Arts.
He has since exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally. Cross-disciplinary activity includes the Segsbury Project with the Institute of Archaeology and Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford and the Thames Gateway Project with Oxford Archaeology and University of the Arts London.
