Subverting the definition of an artist, Goshka Macuga’s practice combines the roles of archivist, critic, philosopher, historian and curator. Often working across a wide variety of media including sculpture, drawing, painting, film, photography and tapestry, she explores the relationships between artist, museum and object.
Born in 1967 in Poland, Macuga is a graduate of Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design and Goldsmiths, University of London. Her works often take the form of site-specific, complex installations, extensively researched and made up of other artists works alongside a variety of disparate objects. Macuga’s large-scale installations, create dramatic environments that challenge traditional ideas of display.
She has exhibited widely, with notable exhibitions being held at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, New Museum, New York and Fondazione Prada, Milan. In 2008, Macuga was nominated for the Turner Prize and participated in the 8th Berlin Biennale in 2014.
