Noble & Webster’s shadow art explored
Tim Noble & Sue Webster are the focus of this season’s ‘Portfolio Feast’, a regular feature in the magazine which explores and showcases the work of a contemporary artist or collective.
It concentrates on the duo’s shadow sculptures, a body of work they have been developing for over a decade. Made using a variety of materials, from taxidermy to scrap metal, they transform beams of projected white light into remarkably detailed silhouettes, playing with ideas of perception and appearance. Outlines of the artists themselves can often be discerned in the shadows.
Paul Stewart, the author of the article, writes: “Tim Noble & Sue Webster’s shadow art reminds us of the perils of assumption and the vagaries of appearance, for things are often not what they first seem.”
