An interactive journey through the history of Pop Art
Launched to coincide with Tate Liverpool’s Transmitting Andy Warhol exhibition, the timeline charts the development of the subversive international Pop Art movement, which saw artists’ appropriation of popular culture and use of found materials shake the art establishment.
The timeline pinpoints key moments in Pop Art’s history, illustrated with artworks, quotes from artists, archive film footage and commentary. It describes Pop Art’s roots in 1940-50s British collage through to its emergence as a major art movement in America, and ending with the shocking assassination attempt on Andy Warhol.
Pop Art image licensing on Artimage
The Art Fund approached Artimage to license Richard Hamilton’s Just What Is It that Makes Today's Home So Different and So Appealing?, which illustrates on the timeline the key moment in 1956 in which the work was shown at Whitechapel Art Gallery, having a profound impact on the aesthetic of Pop Art.
Works appearing in the timeline by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Eduard Paolozzi, Jasper Johns and Peter Blake were also licensed through DACS’ Copyright Licensing service. The copyright and image licence fees crucially go back towards supporting these artists and their estates.
Mel Francis, Image Co-ordinator at the Art Fund, said: “As a national charity working with such an immense variety of images, we frequently rely on DACS for image licensing. Their new image supply service, Artimage, is a really useful resource for us.”
