Joan Eardley revisited in major retrospective exhibition

Unseen Eardley archive on show for the first time

Joan Eardley (1921-1963) – whose images can be licensed through our National Galleries of Scotland collection – is one of Scotland’s most celebrated artists.

The exhibition at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art brings together her iconic paintings of Glasgow’s Townhead district and Catterline, a fishing village on the north-east coast of Scotland.

While her contemporaries left Scotland for London, Eardley regularly moved between these two locations, drawn to their tight-knit communities and sense of place.

In Townhead, she produced some of her most realist work, portraying its rundown tenements and children playing. In Catterline, her paintings took on an expressive, near-abstract quality, with depictions of stormy skies, cottages and rugged coastlines.

Included in the exhibition is a largely unknown archive of Eardley’s sketches and photographs. Exhibited for the first time, they provide a unique insight into the artist’s working methods and practice.

Joan Eardley: A Sense of Place is on show at Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh from 3 December 2016 until 21 May 2017. Find out more.

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue and product range which includes postcards, posters and homewares - many of which were cleared through DACS' Copyright Licensing service.
