Observing the dynamics of power and play
Starting as a live, improvised performance and exhibiting as a multimedia installation, We move in her way is Sonia Boyce’s latest work to be created through an experimental, open-ended laboratory-style process.
Involving the vocal and movement performances of Elaine Mitchener, Barbara Gamper and dancers Eve Stainton, Ria Uttridge and Be van Vark, with an audience of masked participants, Boyce explores questions around power and play using space, sculptural stimuli, and with limited intervention.
The title of the work suggests two possible readings: that ‘she’ dictates our movements; or that we obstruct ‘hers’. Notions of difference and relatedness reference the enduring influence of Dada.
Boyce’s documentation of the performance, transformed into a playful, multi-layered installation, will be exhibited at the ICA, London from 1 February to 16 April 2017. Find out more.
