A story about a legendary shipwreck
Currently on show in Venice at the Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable is Damien Hirst’s first major solo exhibition in Italy since 2004.
Almost ten years in the making, it is his most ambitious and complex project to date. Epic both in scale and concept, the exhibition tells the story of a Roman-era shipwreck, that of the ‘Apistos’, which translates as ‘Unbelievable’. The exhibition presents a vast collection of ancient objects salvaged from the ship’s precious cargo, thought to have belonged to the freed slave Aulus Calidius Amotan (also known as Cif Amotan II).
