Martin Creed’s practice is often underpinned with an open ambiguity about what art is. Working across a wide variety of mediums, he has numbered his works and provided often descriptive titles since 1987. In 2001, he was awarded the Turner Prize for work No. 227, The lights going on and off, which was exactly what the title describes, in an empty gallery.
