Collage is an artform that uses found materials or objects such as illustrations, newspaper clippings and photographs, to create two-dimensional original artworks. The term derives from the French verb ‘coller’ which translates as ‘to glue’.

Although there were earlier informal uses of collage, it is closely associated with twentieth century art. It was introduced as a technique by the Modernist painters Pablo Picasso and George Braques and has since been adopted by abstract artists including Sandra Blow and Terry Frost. Collage was also a predominant technique in the Pop Art movement, used by artists including Richard Hamilton and Peter Blake.

The ideas of collage have been carried over into sculpture in the form of assemblage.
