Hull City of Culture and the reopening of Ferens Art Gallery

Four years in the making, this year-long celebration includes the reopening of Ferens Art Gallery – conceived 100 years ago when Thomas Robinson Ferens acquired a plot of land for the creation of an art gallery in Hull. Their programme includes of the display of five of Francis Bacon’s notorious ‘screaming pope’ paintings, from 21 January – 1 May 2017, and the Turner Prize 2017 exhibition later in the year.


Centenary of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain

In 1917 Duchamp submitted his iconic, repurposed urinal for the Society of Independent Artists’ exhibition at the Grand Central Palace, New York. Despite being rejected, the artwork became a landmark in the history of twentieth century art. Duchamp’s ‘readymade’ concept has since inspired generations of artists, including David Batchelor (pictured) and Richard Wentworth.

1967’s ‘Summer of Love’ was a landmark event in 1960s counterculture. Hundreds of thousands of young hippies gathered in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood, shunning consumerist values and the war-mongering policies of their government. The movement embraced art and music, becoming a back-drop for the work of artists such as Judy Chicago and Andy Warhol.

September to December 2017 will mark the twentieth anniversary of Sensation at the Royal Academy of Art. The exhibition included works by Jake and Dinos Chapman, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Sam Taylor-Johnson and many others - from advertising mogul Charles Saatchi's private art collection. For many of the Young British Artists, it was the death knell of the movement. For others, it became a landmark moment in the history of contemporary British art.

Centenary of the Russian Revolutions

March and November will mark the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolutions. The first revolution saw the collapse of the Russian Empire after Tsar Nicholas II abdicated and was replaced by a provisional government. During the second revolution, the provisional government was overthrown by the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, creating the first communist state in Russia.
