A leading figure in post-war modern British art

Terry Frost, whose images are available to license through Artimage, is considered one of Britain’s greatest post-war artists. A preeminent figure in the St Ives School art movement, he is known for his vibrantly coloured paintings inspired by the natural landscapes of Cornwall and Yorkshire, where he spent his formative years as an artist.

On show until 9 January 2016, the exhibition at Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange celebrates the artist’s significant contribution to modern British art, bringing together a range of his paintings, collages and sculptural forms from public and private collections across the UK.

It takes a fresh look at his work over a six decade period, exploring his fascination with colour as a presence or character itself, alongside his ideas of performance and construction.

The exhibition is one of a number of events taking place across the country this year to celebrate Terry Frost's centenary. Other exhibitions include Frost, Family & Friends, currently on show at Banbury Museum in Oxfordshire until 9 January 2016.

“He was always influenced by nature”

We spoke to Terry Frost’s son, Anthony Frost, about his memories of his father growing up, and his close circle of artist friends based in St Ives, Cornwall. Together, they were at the forefront of major post-war movements in modern and British abstract art.

“He had a beautiful studio next to Porthmeor beach in St Ives. They were really big, old-fashioned studios with artic stoves, lovely wooden floors and big windows. Ben Nicholson was there, and Patrick Heron. Even Francis Bacon had a studio there for a brief time. When my sister was born, we had her christening in dad’s studio. I’ve got a lovely photo of all the artists who attended, dancing away in beatnik outfits.

"It was always a major adventure visiting dad’s friends. We’d often visit Patrick Heron in Eagle’s Nest, just outside St Ives, and Bryan Wynter who lived opposite him. We’d always be in tow, visiting these amazing, strange, creative people.”

Speaking about the influence of his father’s work on his own artistic practice, Anthony said: “We often used to talk about colour and painting. He had a very abstract period but he was always influenced by nature and wanted to convey that in his work. He came from a period when he and his friends were interpreting what they saw in the landscape of St Ives, moving from representation into abstract shapes and forms. They were trying to convey the strength of the wind, the sea, the sun and turn it into something else."
